Dinner Prayers for Kids by Mr. J
THEME: Giving thanks for the food we eat and inviting Jesus to share the meal with us.
PROMPTS: Card table or other small table set with plates/table ware (paper & plastic work best) set in front of the children.
PRESENTATION: Everyone knows that when dinner time rolls around, it is very important for us to say a prayer of thanks to God for the food we get to eat. Because without food, well we just would not be here. Food is what keeps our bodies all fueled up and ready for action. Our stomachs even have a way of telling us they are hungry. If it has been a while since I had something to eat, why my stomach starts to make growling noises. ( make a growling sound as you rub your stomach)
So what is the best prayer to say to give thanks to God at dinner time? There are all kinds of different prayers and it even sometimes depends on what meal we are about to eat like breakfast, lunch, or supper for which prayer we say. We might even change prayers if we are in a hurry.
You probably have heard this prayer: "God is great, God is good, Let us thank him for our food, Amen" This prayer is thankful and tells God how much we appreciate him filling up our bellies with tasty little bites of food. You may even want to add something else to the end of this to prayer to say thank you for someone else very important at dinner time. Next time add "God is great, God is good, Let us thank him for this food, Amen And God bless the cook." That's right, we need to be very thankful for the person who has cooked up that meal so that we can get plenty of good eats.
There are a few other dinner prayers you may not have heard I can share, one is kind of funny, "Dear God, please bless these sinners as they eat their dinner, Amen" If you are in a hurry you might say, "Bless this bunch and bless this lunch, Amen." How about if you forget to say grace before you eat and remember it after the dinner, then you can say this prayer, "Forgive me Lord I'm a little late, so bless this food I just ate. Amen."
Now I bet that many of you sometimes sing your blessing before a meal if you are with a group of kids at church or camp. My favorite is the Johnny Appleseed Prayer that goes like this," Oh the Lord is good to me and so I thank the Lord, for giving me the things I need, the sun and the rain and the appleseeds, the Lord is good to me."
Another group dinner prayer I kind of like is called the Adam's Family Prayer and has the music from the Adam'sFamily movie and TV show. You even get to snap your fingers as you sing this prayer. "Dah da da dah,(snap snap), dah da da dah (snap snap), dah da da dah, dah da da dah, dah da da dah (snap snap), We thank the Lord for giving, the food we need for living, because we really need it, so bless it while we eat it. Dah da da dah,(snap snap), dah da da dah (snap snap), dah da da dah, dah da da dah, dah da da dah, Yeah God! "(snap snap on last 2 words)
Our last prayer today is the one we often use at our house. The one thing extra we do is to set one extra plate at the table and one extra chair. Then we say this dinner prayer, "Come Lord Jesus, be our guest, let these gifts to us be blest. Amen" The reason we set the extra plate and add one chair is to remind us that we share every meal with Jesus. When we say "Come Lord Jesus be our guest," we are inviting Jesus to sit at our table and join us. We should always think that Jesus is sitting at the table with us as we share the blessings of food that he has given us. So today when you go home from church and get ready for dinner, will you remember to set one extra plate and add one chair and then invite Jesus to be your guest at the table.
Amen. That means I'm done talking.
