The Good Shepherd (By Tim Johnson-Photos by Capt. Kris Johnson)
THEME: Jesus is the Good Shepherd who protects us just like a good shepherd protects his flock of sheep
BIBLE VERSES: Passages from John 10
PROMPT: This Children's Message is designed to be given with the powerpoint or a printed booklet to read to the children. It is especially useful if your church has an overhead screen that displays the pictures and images.
MESSAGE OUTLINE: (Use the powerpoint or printed booklet as your guide) Our Bible verse today is John 10:11, which says, "I am the Good Shepherd and good shepherd gives up his life for his sheep."
Now in Bible times, sheep were an important part of life in the middle east where Jesus was born and raised. Sheep provided wool for clothes and food. People who took care of sheep were called shepherds and they went with the sheep out into the hills and pastures to watch over the sheep to protect them.
Being a good shepherd was important becuase the sheep need help finding fresh grass, water, and protection from other animals that might try to eat them. Sheep in the area where Jesus grew up look different than the sheep we have in our country today
In the middle east, much of the land is dry and sheep have to keep moving to find more to eat. in the rocky hills Shepherds even stayed out in the field over night to keep watch on the flock.
Even in today's world we need shepherds to watch over sheep. But when the Bible talks about being good shepherds, it is really talking about people just like you and me. You see, there are many who do not know that Jesus died for their sins. The Bible says, "I have other sheep that are not in the sheep pen. I must bring them together too."
So it is up to us to be good shepherds. We must bring in the sheep just like a shepherd, bring them in to the church where they can hear God's word. (end presentation and send children back)
