MESSAGE: Everyone knows that we celebrate the birth of our country on the 4th of July by shooting off fireworks, having picnics, and doing lots of fun things. We want to show our pride at being a nation and for the freedoms that we enjoy in the United States. Cool beans! That sounds like a lot of fun.
What are some of the fun things you and your family do to celebrate the 4th of July holiday? (give the kids a moment to respond)
Our Bible verse today helps remind us that this holiday should also remember our God. Psalm 33:12 says, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord."
The country we live in today started with God and with the Founders’ belief in rights that are his gift to us. If you are an American, it is important that you remember this as we celebrate our country's birthday from 1776. The Declaration of Independence issued from Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, included four separate references to God. In addition to the “endowed by their Creator” line, there is an opening salute to “the laws of nature’s God,” an appeal to “the Supreme Judge of the World,” and a closing expression of “firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence.”
Our early presidents and writers of the Constitution all expressed their belief in God and his importance to our new country. So today I would ask that you remember the United States is formed on the gifts of God to us, our freedoms and right to worship him without persecution.
Together let us sing a song asking God to bless our nation.
God bless America,
Land that I love,
Stand beside her and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above;
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans white with foam,
God bless America,
My home, sweet home.
God bless America,
My home, sweet home.
