Living Stones (By Tim Johnson)
THEME: We along with Jesus are the cornerstones of the church
BIBLE VERSES: 1 Peter 2: 5 "you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood..."
PROMPTS: Unique rock from garden or yard
MESSAGE: I brought something special from home today to help me tell you about a story in the Bible written by a man named Peter. It's just a plain old rock from my garden at home. (Describe it) Do you know any other words for rock? (answers)
Yes, a stone. In our story today they use the word stone to describe rocks and sometimes they even use them to describe people! So the writer of this story, Peter, some people even call him, "the rock." Well, Peter said Jesus was like a stone! How can a person be like a rock? (answers)
Well Peter said Jesus was like a stone, but not just any stone like this one from my garden, but a corner stone. Do you know what a cornerstone is? Well I am not much of a builder, but I know that to build something you need just the right rock or stones or bricks to build everything else around. If I picked a pointy rock like this one from my garden, would it be a very good cornerstone for a house? Why not? (answers)
Right, if the cornerstone is the wrong shape, everything else would fall down and crash.
Peter was thinking that just like you need the perfect cornerstone for building, you need just the right person to
build your church around. He said that Jesus was the cornerstone of the church. You can't build a building with just one stone can you? Of course not and you can't build a church with just one person. Who else would we need to be part of a church to make it strong? (answers)
Pastors, Sunday School teachers, visitors, what about people who bring the donuts and coffee? We need lots of different people who believe in Jesus as the cornerstone to be a strong church. It is almost like you are the stones of the church. Listen to verse 5 of 1 Peter, chapter 2, "you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood..."
Wait a minute, it says, "YOU are like living stones," does it say only pastors or grownups are living stones? No, you ... kids can be living stones. You are an important part of the church. And who is the cornerstone of the church? Jesus!
Let us put our hands together and say thank you to God for our church. "Heavenly Father, thank you that Jesus is our cornerstone and we pray that you will help us be living stones for you every day. Amen."
