No "I" In Team (by Tim Johnson)
THEME: Our church life is just like a sports team. There are many different positions and every one has an important job that requires faith and dedication.
BIBLE VERSE: 2 Timothy 4:7 - I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
PROMPT: Wear a sports jersey, or bring in some sports equipment like a basketball or baseball glove/bat. Then use these sports items as a lead-in during the presentation.
MESSAGE: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith, 2nd Timothy 4, verse 7. Everyone enjoys sports. We play all kinds of different games with different kinds of equipment. (Share with group 1 or 2 items from your selected prompts and explain how they are part of that particular activity.)
What are some of your favorite sports? (let the children answer and followup with asking for some examples of how the sport is played)
One thing about playing a team sport is that everybody plays different positions. Like in baseball one person is the pitcher and one player catches it when it is thrown. Other players cover 1st base or 2nd base, while other players are in the outfield to catch the ball if it is hit a long ways. Then everyone takes a turn batting and of course you have someone who is your coach, who helps you know what to do and to play better. It takes a whole team to play the game.
Now here is a strange question, how do you spell the word "team?" (If someone knows let them answer or you may write it yourself on a board or large piece of paper) Is there a letter "I" anywhere in the word team? I don't think so! To have a good team, everyone must play together and do their job. For a team to be a winner, everyone must forget about playing just for themselves and play for the team. There is no "I" in team.
A church is just like a sports team in many ways. You have the pastor who is like the coach. He leads the way and helps guide you to be good Christians. Then there are church members who teach Sunday School or play special music. Other team members help with setting up the church or passing the offering plate, while some members fix food or help with special events. Even being a good student in Sunday School or Confirmation is part of the game plan. When everybody on the church team does their special job well, you have a winner!
You see, that is what Timothy was talking about in his Bible verse. If we fight the good fight and run a good race for the church and especially if we keep the faith, then we are part of a winning team for our church.
Now team, let's go win this game for ______________ (name of your church or group)!
