Theme: Trying to look important to others is not what God wants us to do.
Bible Verse: Proverbs 29:23
"A man's pride shall bring him low, but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit."
Prompts: Pictures of frogs, frogs in a container, or stuffed/plastic toy frogs
Message: Have you ever gone camping in the summer or maybe fishing so you were out on a lake or a pond at night time? There you are in the moon light and it is warm and cozy out just as you walk over to the water. Then as you get closer, you hear this loud racket that sounds like a bunch of buzz saws all grinding away at the same time.
Next you look out over the water and you see these big old bull frogs sitting on logs or lily pads with their cheeks all puffed out like big balloons. Each time the bull frog puffs his cheeks he bellows out a loud noise (simulate a bull frog croaking-you may even bend your arms and blow up your cheeks as you croak).
So here are all these big old bull frogs, puffing themselves up and making the biggest racket they can. It is like each of the frogs is trying to get your attention so you will look at them and see how important they are.
(stand in front of the group and mimic the frogs while croaking)
"LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!"
Why I believe that them frogs are the most prideful creatures I have ever seen and heard. And to top it off they keep their croaking up for hours at a time. They must really want others to think they are something special. Brag, brag, brag, brag, brag.
Have you ever wondered if we sometimes get to acting just like them old frogs? As I listen to people talk I realize they are starting to act just like those frogs when they start to show off and brag about things they have and do. Here are some examples.
This friend of mine got a new bike and the next thing I knew he was showing it off and croaking just like a frog, "SEE MY NEW BIKE! LOOK AT MY NEW BIKE! I GOT A NEW BIKE"
Another person got a new fancy TV set and the next thing I know he is saying, "SEE MY NEW TV, LOOK AT MY NEW TV, IT'S A BIG SCREEN! LOOK AT MY STUFF!"
Wow, talk about being full of pride and acting just like a frog. Our Bible verse today is from Proverbs 29:23 and it warns us, ""A man's pride shall bring him low, but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit." So instead of showing off and bragging about our many blessings, we should remain humble and thankful for the gifts we receive.
That's right, do not act like a frog.
