SEND A CARD (By Tim Johnson)
THEME: Sending a written card with a message of God's love to someone who may need a reminder of what God's love can do in the real world.
BIBLE VERSE: Proverbs 3:6, "In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and he shall direct thy paths."
PROMPT: Bring in some inspirational post cards or provide the children with cards to be colored and or filled in with messages of joy and comfort from the Bible. Some sample cards are shown below. Be sure to make it easy for the cards to be addresed and sent.
MESSAGE: Once upon a time, way far back before people had all the wonderful modern technology we have today, like cell phones, the internet, text messages, tweets, Facebook, you know, all of the important suff that makes life so good, there was something called a post card. People would actually write on this piece of paper that usually had a picture or something special written on it and then put it in this thing called a mailbox and wait for someone called the "postman" to come get the card and deliver it. I know that is hard to image, but it is a true fact.
The neat thing about the old time post cards was that many people used to send them while they were away on trips or vacations. So the people who got the post cards could see interesting places and events. It was awesome! I remember getting cards one year from Disneyland and another time from the ocean out by Florida. (You may want to show some personal post cards to the kids from your own collection)
The next thing that was special about post cards, is that they always had a very short message, because there was not much room to write on. So if you were sending a card you had to make it short and sweet, just like a text message. Then there was just enough room to write the address on for the person you were sending it to. Even though the message was always short, it was nice to read and then know that someone important to you was thinking about you and your family.
Now wouldn't it be a nice thing if people took just a few minutes every now and then to still send a post card? But not just any old regular post card, a card with a short message from the Bible or about God's love for us. Then we could share with someone else a quick reminder of how much God loves us. That is much more important than any old vacation post card. (You may share some of the cards you have or use selections from those below)
Today we would like each family to send one post card to someone important in their life that they think needs a quick reminder of God's love. (Distribute your cards in what ever manner best fits your church group setting or finish them as a youth group activity.) As we go back to our seats today, I would like to share our Bible verse of the day, "In all things acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:6.
