PROMPTS: Download pictures of leaning barns for your big screen or have a picture or two of a leaning barn you can hold up to the children.
MESSAGE: Every time I am asked to pray, I think of the old fellow who always prayed, "Lord, prop us up on the leanin' side." After hearing him pray that prayer many times, someone asked him why he prayed that strange prayer.
He answered the question, "I got an old barn out back and it's been there a long time, it's withstood a lot of weather, gone through a lot of storms, and it's stood for many years."
The old barn is still standing, but the old man said that one day he noticed it was leaning to one side a bit. So he went and got some poles and propped it up on the leaning side so it wouldn't fall down. He said those poles were just enough extra support to keep that barn from falling over in the storms of life.
That makes me think about how much I am like that old barn. I've been through some bad weather in my days and there have been some bad times when things did not go right. I even find myself leaning to one side from time to time just like that barn. Kind of need to have some help just like that old barn, to keep me standing.
When that happens, I ask the Lord to prop me up on my "leanin' side." I say, "Lord, put your poles against my leaning side so I don't fall over, help keep me standing up through those times that are almost more than I can handle on my own."
Sometimes we get to leaning toward anger or towards things that we shouldn't, so we need to pray, "Lord prop us up on our leaning side, so we will stand tall and straight again, to glorify the Lord." For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45.
