MESSAGE: What in the world is this day everybody calls Valentine's Day? I mean folks send flowers to their girlfriend or give them big boxes of chocolate candy and then maybe share Valentine Day cards. There are always fancy hearts on stuff and then that mushy stuff written on everything, "I love you! Be my Valentine!"
What kind of a holiday is this Valentine Day anyway?
So I checked into how this Valentine Day got started and I found out nobody is really sure on how it came to be. Some say it is named after a priest who helped people get married and then was killed by a Roman emperor who got mad at him. They named this guy Saint Valentine for what happened. Other people say that the holiday itself got started when this poet guy started writing fancy love poems and so people decided February 14th is the day we should tell our special person "we love you" and give them those flowers or candy or cards with poems.
This year I wrote a special love poem for my special Valentine. It is so romantic. Let me share it with you.
Roses are red
Violets are purple
Sugar is sweet
And so is maple surple
Now you know I am just kidding around about that poem, but I wonder, what would be the best Valentine ever written? So as I was reading the Bible I realized that God had written the best Valentine ever for us. It is the verse from the Bible, John 3:16 which says, ""For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life."
In the best Valentine ever, God tells us he loves us and instead of giving us flowers or candy or a card, he is giving us eternal life with him in heaven. That is better than any other gift someone could give us to show their love. What a wonderful Valentine! Before we end, I would like all of us to sing together a wonderful little song about love to remind us of God's best Valentine. The song is "Jesus Loves Me."
Jesus loves me this I know
For the Bible tells me so
Little ones to him belong
They are weak, but he is strong
Yes Jesus loves me
Yes Jesus loves me
Yes Jesus loves me
The Bible tells me so
(As you dismiss the children you may share with them some Valentines to give to their parents.)
