MESSAGE:
Have you ever been to a homecoming parade? Homecoming parades are exciting and they have all kinds of people and things to see as they come down the road. Most parades start with a police car and a fire truck, flashing their red lights and running their sirens to clear the street. (mimic a police car and make a siren sound or a fire truck air horn)
Then comes some soldiers carrying the American flag and other flags. Everybody stands up to show their respect or even salutes the flags as they march by. (mimic a salute)
Then there are marching bands with cheer leaders and flag bearers out in front so you know which school they are from. Following them are the band comes marching down the road to the beat of the drums. (mimic a drummer and then band members playing insturments)
Sometimes one of the groups riding down the road will throw out some candy to the people watching the parade and all the kids knock each other over trying to grab the cndy off the curb and side of the road. (toss some penny candy into the group for an immediate reaction)
Finally comes the homecoming royalty. These are the folks selected to be the King and Queen for the big football game. They ride down the road in some fancy car with no top, all dressed up fancy and they wave to the crowd. (mimic a unique hand wave)
The Palm Sunday parade that Jesus was in was even more important than any home coming parade, for it was a parade of the King. But I do not think you would think a King would come to a parade like Jesus did that Palm Sunday morning. There were no police cars or fire trucks, no flags or marching bands or fancy cars to carry him down the road. Instead the people cut down palm branches just like we have here in church today. They held these palm branches up and waved them back and forth. Some of the people took off their cloaks or robes and laid them down on the road
for Jesus and others laid the palm branches on the ground along with the cloaks.
Then the people shouted, "Hosanna! Blessed is the King!" All up and down the road they shouted, "Hosanna! Blessed is the King!"
Now instead of riding in a fancy car, Jesus rode in the parade on a young donkey. While that may seem kind of strange, it was a prophecy and a way for the people to know that Jesus was the chosen one, the King. It also showed that he was humble.
Today on Palm Sunday, let us all remember that just as the people of Jeusalem welcomed Jesus as their King, we need to welcome him this morning as our King, the Savior who brings us eternal life. So together let us all stand up and shout our message together.
"Hosanna! Blessed is the King!"
