Thanksgiving-No Turkeys Here
THEME: Giving thanks to God for all he gives us during the Thanksgiving holiday.
PROMPTS: Any Thanksgiving holiday type of item that the children can view or hand each a handout from the download.
MESSAGE: Whenever you hear the word Thanksgiving, what is the one thing you think about more than anything else? That's right, turkey.
Everybody knows that at Thanksgiving you cook up the biggest bird you can find at the store, stuff it with dressing, and then after you have eaten all kinds of turkey, dressing, cranberries, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes with melted marsh mellows, corn, green beans and cream of mushroom casserole, jello salad, rolls with jelly, and what ever else you can put on the table, you have yourself a great big slice of pumpkin pie with whipped cream all over it. By the time you are done eating a Thanksgiving dinner you can barely move.
However, there is another kind of Thanksgiving that has no turkeys in it. I call this a "veggie Thanksgiving." To understand what a "veggie Thanksgiving" is you first need to understand what the word thanksgiving actually means. Here is what one dictionary gives for the meaning of the word Thanksgiving: The act of giving thanks, a formal, often public expression of thanks to God.
You see there are no turkeys here in real thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is where we pray and tell God, "Hey, thanks so much for everything you have given us!"
So instead of thinking about how much turkey and good food we can eat, what we should be thinking about is how to thank God for his goodness to us. So right now I would like to ask some of you to tell me just one thing you are thankful for. (listen to their answers)
Now let us all fold our hands and give thanks for these things we are so thankful for this day. "Dear Lord, we are thankful for ...(name the things mentioned by the children). And God, we also thank you for the food we have at our Thanksgiving dinner, because that turkey is awesome. Amen."
