How many of you kids here today eat some kind of bread or crackers? Why, we all do because it tastes good and it fills up our tummies and gives us energy to run, jump and play. People from the start of history and way back in Bible times relied on bread products to keep them alive. (Share any samples, if used).
Did you know that during the Civil War, when soldiers were on the march, they ate a type of cracker called "Hardtack"? This cracker was so hard the soldiers nicknamed it "teeth dullers." Sometimes they had to smash the crackers with their fists before they could eat it. They didn't have a very good flavor, but it kept them alive.
Back in Bible times, the Children of Israel were desperate for food while they wandered in the wilderness after escaping the evil Pharaoh of Egypt. God fed them manna. Manna is described in the book of Numbers as coming with the dew overnight. The word manna meant, "what is it" because that is what they asked when they first saw it. It was probably similar to a small round cracker.
Although it was probably eatable in it's natural state, it was usually ground in a mill or beaten in a mortar and then boiled and made into cakes or crackers. (Share the oyster crackers).
We are not sure, but manna was small and they would have to gather it every morning because it only lasted a day.
Yes sir, bread in whatever form is so important to us that we even put it into our prayers, "Give us this day our daily bread."
So what does the Bible mean when it says, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."
Jesus compared himself to the manna and said that he was the true bread from heaven. He explained that anyone who believed in him as God's son would never die. He said they would never hunger or thirst. Jesus is the bread of life. If you accept Jesus you will live forever.
Now let me ask you a question. If I told you I had something you could eat and you would live forever, would you want it? Yes, of course you would. When you eat something you take it inside your body, your body digests it and it becomes part of you.
That is what happens when you ask Jesus to be your Savior. You ask him into your heart, he comes to live inside you and becomes part of you for the rest of your life. Because God will live forever, so will you. We can be thankful that God sent Jesus to us as the bread of life.
