THEME: The Palm Sunday story of how the people honored their King by laying their cloaks and palm branches on the road before Jesus as he rode in on the donkey.
BIBLE VERSE: Matt. 21:5, "Look, your King is coming to you!"
PROMPT: Some type of cloak, shawl, or poncho that reflects the cloaks laid on the ground before Jesus. May also have palm leaves if available for the youth.
MESSAGE: (Begin the message by wearing or displaying the cloak or poncho as you arrive in front of the children)
Does anyone know what type of clothing this is? It is a cloak and in the time of Jesus it was a very important piece of clothing. People would wrap it around their face (demonstrate) to help keep the dust and sand out of their face during a dust storm in the areas that were deserts.
You would also wrap it tightly around yourself to keep warm in the evening and at night (demonstrate) when everything cooled down after the sun went down. It could get very cool without the sun to heat things up. You could also use the cloak as a shade to help keep you cool and protected from the hot desert sun (demonstrate by holding over head).
Now when Jesus came riding into the city on Palm Sunday on a donkey, people greeted him as a King. For the prophets had said that a King was coming. So as Jesus began to enter the city the people treated him like they would any King of the government. They took off their own cloaks and laid them across the dirt road to soften the path for the donkey and Jesus. They wanted the road to be easy and soft so they covered up the rough spots with their own clothes. This was a very important act because their cloaks were important to the people and considered a valuable item.
They also laid down the palm leaves that we have with us on Palm Sunday with their cloaks. (demonstrate by laying down the cloak and have children put down palm leaves if they are available).
"Look your King is coming!" These words from Matthew 21:5 were the words of the people as Jesus entered the city. They honored their King with their own cloaks, one of the items of the greatest personal value. So now you know another part of the story of Jesus and Palm Sunday.
Let us fold our hands and say a prayer to end our message today. "Dear God, we thank you for sending your son Jesuas on a donkey into the city where the people honored their King with their cloaks and palms and that Jesus would die on the cross for us. Let us remember your gift. Amen"
